Greens call on Exeter MPs to pledge support for new legislation to address the climate and nature crises

Climate and Nature Bill (CAN) needs at least 100 supporting MPs to have a chance of becoming law

The Green Party in Exeter is calling on the city’s MPs, Steve Race and David Reed, to pledge their support for the Climate and Nature Bill (CAN). The proposed legislation aims to ensure a comprehensive and joined-up approach to addressing the climate emergency and nature crisis.

The Bill, which was written by scientists, experts and campaigners and has cross-party backing, was first introduced in Parliament by former Green MP Caroline Lucas in September 2020. Now, environmental campaigner, ocean rower and Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage is championing the Bill having topped Parliament’s Private Members’ Bill ballot.

Exeter Green councillor Andy Ketchin said:

“Yes we CAN! We now have a real opportunity to enshrine in law an obligation by the UK to act to keep global warming within 1.5°C and reverse biodiversity loss in one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. Crucially, this legislation also calls for a citizens assembly, where members of the public will be involved in finding the fairest way to make the urgent shift to a greener economy and society.

“The Climate and Nature Bill needs the support of at least 100 MPs. That’s why we are calling on Exeter’s MPs, Steve Race and David Reed, to demonstrate their commitment to firm and urgent action on the climate and nature crises by throwing their weight behind this Bill.

“Green MP Caroline Lucas introduced the Bill in parliament. Now Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage has chosen to take up the baton and champion this Private Members Bill in the new parliament. We urge Exeter residents to email or write to their MP to call on them to pledge support to help make CAN a reality [1].”
