Greens have secured their highest ever County Council result in Exeter, securing nearly 18% of the votes in the St David’s and Haven Banks division and coming third. This was nearly double that received for the next highest Green result – 10% in St Sidwell’s and St James. Exeter Green Party election agent, Chris Dent, said:
“This result just goes to show that with a strong candidate and a dedicated team knocking on doors, people become convinced that green policies can improve their lives while safeguard our precious environment. What is clear though, from the immensely hard work that many volunteers put in, is that Greens need to work twice as hard as mainstream Parties to win votes!”
Across England Greens were the only Party, apart from the Conservatives, not to see a net fall in council seats and they won new County Council seats in Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset. Diana Moore, a highly-respected community activist, who stood in the St David’s and Haven Banks division, said:
“I’d like to thank the 620 people who voted for me and the wonderful dedicated team who supported my campaign. I spoke to many residents during the course of the campaign, learning about the issues that matter to them. Many have been persuaded by green solutions to these problems and this encouraging result sets us up well for fighting the city council elections next year.”
