Exeter Greens call for ‘sharp U-turn’ on bus station car park proposal and invite residents to share alternative ideas

Exeter Green Party has launched a campaign to stop the building of a car park on the site of the former bus station in the city centre and is inviting residents in Exeter to put forward alternative positive ideas [1]. The Green Party revealed last month that it is the intention of the Labour administration to use the site for a new car park.

Green councillor for St David’s ward in the city, Tess Read, said:

“We need the Labour-led Council to make a sharp U-turn on this crazy idea. The city centre does not need more car parking spaces and the proposal flies in the face of Council promises to reduce carbon emissions, encourage active travel and reduce air pollution.

“This is a prime site in the city centre and we have a once in a generation opportunity to transform it into something distinctive for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.

“We know people in Exeter have good ideas on how this site could be used creatively, in ways which are socially, environmentally and economically beneficial. Ideas include a covered market, a space for local businesses and social enterprises, or a new urban park. We want people in Exeter to share their ideas and help shape the future of the city centre. This is why we have launched a campaign to say no to a car park; yes to positive alternatives.”
